Site Features List.
The list below is NOT in order of priority at the moment. We would need to evaluate how difficult some feature requests are and cross that along with time restraints/requirements. It is literally just a brain dump for the moment.
New Features/Pages
- Fix login problems that folks are experiencing. (DONE)
- Email notifications: Community Members, News Publsihers and Reporters - and then disassocate these as roles (quick conversation).
- Make sure blog posts are individual - not for everyone. (right now EVERYONE see's the "delete, edit" buttons - although they only work for specific individuals that have access.
- Create a "Share this page" for every pitch: that includes Email/Twitter/Facebook: Mockups here: http://www.publiquedomain.com/clients/spot.us/comprehensives/tellFriends.html
- Pitch's blog: Ability for reporter to send private updates via the blog that only other people that have permission on the blog can read. This way the reporter's and editors can do their work through the site as opposed to email. Email notifications about these types of blog posts only go to folks who have permissions.
- TABS: Comments, blog posts, and everything in the middle column should either become a tab or get integrated elsewhere. Pitches to become a two column layout - not three.
- Recently Donated to search page: Just shows the pitches in order of most recently donated to.
- "I'll Donate Talent" - can lead to a new page. On that page are assignments created by the reporter. They are: Headline, brief description and payout. The payout can be anywhere from $0 to the maximum amount that is being raised on the pitch itself. This turns the reporter into a project manager as much as a singular reporter. If an assignment is taken: (What does this look like).
- Build out showcases: What is a showcase: A news org or genre that has multiple pitches inside of it: Student pitches, and pitches from Oakland Local or Public Press. Need to think through how this looks/feels. A design problem.
- To make the existing About Page editable easy. Without having to do deploy's: ie: We need a wyswig for it. Same with page on advisors, etc. We need to make these changes faster.
- Take a good look at the Pitch page: Include disclosure section. (part of a longer conversation re: organizing the marketplace).
- Typo on this page: http://spot.us/pages/about#faq_reporter (others typos to fix). Need wyswig to make edits quickly.
- Get on Google News
- Front page redesign: More open and highlight finished content, blog content and newsletter sign ups/content better. Also make featured story bigger image and donate button. Essentially making the home page busier. http://theportlander.com/
- Media Partners Page (see above). This should be a new page that is editable via Wyswig. Also need a "Content has appeared" page - which is a wyswig.
- Make Press page a wyswig: Add the list of folks that have republished our content to press page.
- SMS - texting tips. Look into iPhone App.
- Incorporate Google Checkout as option similar to PayPal.
- RSS Feeds: See bugs
- Install User Voice: For better feedback
- Default Donation size: Should be determined by the reporter - it should be a drop down including options of 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 50: and what they pick determines the suggested donation
- News organization: name should be displayed over individual name if it is filled out.
- Ajax helpers: Little ?'s that if a person mouse's over them - popups will explain stuff about the site.
- Comments: Ability to delete comments if utterly off the charts. Add emails of anyone who comments to list of emails in spot.us/admin/pitches - so we can contact them when the story is finished.
- A "Donors" page that lists EVERYONE who donated and how much they've donated total. Spot.Us and David's account won't be included.
- Registration page: Any way to make it a vertical rule/divide instead of horizontal? Need to highlight the "send new password" link - which is somewhat hidden. That should be brought up to the top under "sign in" for returning users.
- Dead Pitches List: As an admin - I want to see a list of all canceled/deleted pitches so I can look and learn from them.
- Site Alerts: Need to go over what the existing alerts are and what might be needed.
- Email Newsletters: Ability to send messages to all members of Spot.Us. Ability to send emails to just reporters. Ability to send emails to just news orgs. Ability to send messages to just community members. (Note: Does this require in-site messages and mail or can we just push it to people's regular emails?
- Integration of Mail Chimp into sign ups on Spot.Us
- Stream of activity: Whenever somebody makes one of the following actions on Spot.Us it is show on their profile page: comments, donates, pledges, creates pitch, creates tip, Or a story is created that they donated to. This list
- Clean URLS: Spot.Us/story-of-pitch-here-instead-of-a-number
- SEO Optimization: Basic tricks we can employ.
- Anonymous donations: One of three options here. (1. We let this be a feature set from the reporter. They can accept anonymous donations - but then ALL donations must be anonymous for that pitch. (2. We allow anonymous donations on any pitch but "anonymous" is treated as one person - and is capped at 20% towards any pitch. If we already have received 20% of a pitch via anonymous donations - nobody else can donate anonymously. (David's preference). (3. We simple put our foot down and say - no anonymous donations ever.
- Donate to the organization: allow ability (feature a button) for people to donate to the Spot.us organization rather than a specific pitch. That way administrators can use these donations toward stories that need funding, operations, etc.
- Regular credit card charges: If we can work out beats (City Budget Watchdog) that we intend on re-occuring. Perhaps we can have a checkbox so that people's credit cards will be charged automatically at the end of a month. In that case - we still need to represent their donation on the same pitch, and make sure that the pitch's goal is raised at the end of the month - so as to represent the new goal.
- Allow reporter to edit/modify his or her own pitch page to change description, deliverability, qualifications, etc. It would also be cool if reporters could upload their own photo albums, audio, videos etc. relating to pitches.
Bugs
- RSS: Doesn't appear to be working 100% for the news_items page. We need to parse out an RSS for tips, an RSS for pitches and an RSS for finished stories!
- Needs to work in Opera.
- Remember me: Is this feature working properly?
- Spelling error in FAQ's under "What does joining the reporting team mean" - also should change text to reflect "I'll Donate Talent" now.
